The market town of St. Peter-Freienstein in the district of Leoben, through which the long-distance hiking trail Iron Trail also passes, extends over an area of 27 km² surrounded by forests and mountains at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. The village consists of the cadastral communities of Hessenberg, Traidersberg, Tollinggraben and St. Peter Freienstein itself.
The pilgrimage church Maria Freienstein and Friedhofen Castle with its museum are attractions for culturally interested guests. The pilgrimage church of Maria Freienstein is situated high up on a rock and attracts particular interest due to its unusual location. Friedhofen Castle, which was recently renovated, presents central areas of mining in the stylish ambience of a former hammer mill manor. The castle can also be rented for private events.
