Natural gems in Hochsteiermark

Business travellers can find natural highlights in all parts of Hochsteiermark. For instance, check out the region’s many themed hiking trails such as the “klimawandeln” adventure trail at Mürzer Oberland Nature Park or the Bahnwanderweg trail from Semmering to Mürzzuschlag. For some urban vibes, visit one of Hochsteiermark’s many charming towns and cities. If you like (e-)biking, we recommend Windpark Pretul with its 45-kilometre network of cycling and mountain biking trails. Alternatively, the Mürz Valley cycle path offers varied cycling experiences along Alpine mountain landscapes, picturesque valleys and enchanting towns and villages. The trail ends in Bruck an der Mur, where you can marvel at famous sights like Kornmesserhaus or Eiserne Brunnen.

If you didn’t bring your own (e-)bike, you can rent one at many rental shops across the region.

Hochsteiermark, a winter sports paradise

When temperatures start to drop and winter hits Hochsteiermark, it’s the perfect time for some after-work skiing on the varied slopes of Hochsteiermark’s ski resorts! Fans of cross-country skiing will love the perfectly groomed World Championship trail in the Mariazellerland region. If you enjoy exploring the wintry landscape on snowshoes, we recommend a hike to Hinteralm at Mürzer Oberland Nature Park.

Cultural highlights in Hochsteiermark

Impressive buildings, fascinating exhibitions at numerous museums and plenty of traditional events: Culture lovers are spoilt for choice in the villages, towns and cities of Hochsteiermark.

One of the region’s cultural hubs is Bruck an der Mur, also known as the Kornmesser city. The city owes this name to Kornmesserhaus, one of Bruck’s most important sights. With its elaborate arcades and impressive loggia, the building is a sight to behold. Just around the corner, at the main square, you can find another one of the city’s major highlights: the Eiserne Brunnen, the most prestigious well of Styria.

We also recommend a walk up Schlossberg hill to enjoy the splendid views across the city. From up there, you can even spot the clocktower and the “Kanonenhütte” of Landskron Castle and the winding city lanes below.

Original Styrian bee honey, fish and meat specialities, cheese from local dairies, irresistible Hochschwab chocolate and Mariazell gingerbread: Foodies will love the culinary delights of Hochsteiermark!

At the region’s many restaurants and inns, you can enjoy lovingly prepared traditional delights. If you’re a fan of fine dining, we recommend visiting one of the region’s six toque-rated restaurants. Venison lovers should head to one of the region’s “Wilde Wirte” restaurants, where they serve sophisticated specialities based on chamois or deer meat.

Or how about combining culinary delights with outdoor bliss during an alfresco picnic? Simply stop by one of the region’s many delis and fill your basket with fresh bread, homemade spreads, pesto and other treats. Finding a picnic spot in Hochsteiermark is easy: There are countless lovely places between Mariazell and Bruck, including Lake Erlaufsee, Mürzer Oberland Nature Park or Peter Rosegger’s Waldheimat.
