We start from the parking area at Gasthof Moassa and ascend via a former ski slope and a forest road to the uninhabited Karreralm (shelter). There, we turn right and follow a trail that crosses the westernmost Raxenmäuer and the Paulaturm at the base of the wall. The trail then leads to a ridge covered in dwarf pines. From there, we continue upwards in several switchbacks to the base of the wall and the red-marked entry point of the "Großes Fuchsloch."
The well-marked trail now takes us through the rock walls (a short and easy climbing section, but surefootedness is required!) and ends on the Rax plateau.
From there, we quickly reach the Karl Ludwig Haus. After a break, we hike over the Heukuppe (at 2,007 m, the highest point of the entire Raxalpe and the Mürzer Oberland Nature Park) in the direction of Gamseck.
Shortly before Gamseck, we reach a distinct trail junction and turn left downhill onto the Altenberger Steig.
Following this route, we return to Gasthof Moassa in about 1.5 hours.
Alternative Approach:
If access to Gasthof Moassa is closed (Monday – Wednesday), the approach starts from the parking area at Preiner Gscheid via the lower Reisstalersteig to the base of the Raxenmäuer. Instead of ascending via the Reisstalersteig, continue west along the base of the wall for a few more minutes until reaching the Fuchsloch entry point.
