Stroll between Rosenhain and Mariagrün

Castles and villas: the idyllic path between Rosenhain and Mariagrün invites you to take a look around while enjoying a leisurely stroll.
Only a few steps away from the busy Heinrichstraße a quiet and green paradise unfolds. The view over the city directly from the Cafe Rosenhain also speaks for itself. So it's no wonder that this place is popular for celebrations and festivities of all kinds.

Another jewel in the middle of the lush greenery is the pilgrimage church of Mariagrün. Not far from the church, where, by the way, the famous Austrian writer Peter Rosegger married his first wife, a memorial path was donated to the poet.

It is recommended to arrive by public transport!

Arrival by car:

Via the A2 or A9 freeway you can get directly to the provincial capital Graz.

Take tram line 3 or 5 (towards Andritz) from Hauptplatz to Keplerbrücke. Change here to bus route 58 to Mariagrün and get off at Liebiggasse. Now the leisurely tour through the residential area with villas begins. Through a wrought-iron archway you turn into Max-Mell-Allee and pass the Jesuits’ summer refectory, built in 1564 and now abandoned, which served as a place of recuperation. Shortly afterwards, a forest path branches off to the left (with a pram, follow the asphalted road), which leads you directly to two ponds in the forest. Max-Mell-Allee crosses again here and leads you directly to “Café Rosenhain”, where you can enjoy various delicacies as well as a magnificent view of Graz and the Schlossberg. Then follow Panoramagasse. You will see “Panoramahof” – a Windsor-style castle from the 1920s. At “Minoritenschlössl”, which dates from the 17th century, you turn left into Quellengasse. Your path is lined by magnificent villas from a wide variety of eras and architectural styles.

Leave Quellenweg at the fork in the road heading towards Schwarzbauerweg. You pass “Rosenschlössl”, which was planned in 1912 by the city architects Burgstaller and Zauner, and other villas until an inconspicuous little path appears on the left (with prams continue on Schwarzbauerweg, then turn sharp left into Mariagrüner Straße). This leads to the picturesque pilgrimage church of Mariagrün, whose history dates back to the 17th century. The well-known Styrian poet Peter Rosegger married here in 1873, which is commemorated by the Peter Rosegger Memorial Trail that starts there. Take the Gedächtnisweg memorial trail or walk along Mariagrüner Straße to get to the crossroads at Mariatroster Straße. Here, tram line 1 returns to the city centre in the direction of Eggenberg.

If you take the very last section (route option 2) and go around the Mariagrüner Straße, this tour is suitable for baby carriages.
Getting there: Tram line 3 or 5 from Hauptplatz; bus route 58 from Keplerbrücke

Getting back: Tram line 1 from Mariagrün
