Gamsstein Round

Where the heart of mountain lovers beats faster On the Gamsstein , the Palfauer's local mountain, is one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the Styrian-Lower Austrian Eisenwurzen. Whether you choose the steepest route from the Palfauer Bergbauern and the Naturfreundehütte, look for the longest ascent via the Moaralm or climb from the NÖ Hollenstein over the Sandgraben - you will be rewarded with a magnificent mountain panorama! On these hot days you should get up early to escape the heat to some extent and reach the 1770-metre-high summit cross.
The Gamsstein is a 1,774 m high mountain in the Ybbstaler Alps. Over the mountain runs the border between the Austrian provinces of Styria and Lower Austria.

The Gamsstein can be reached via easy paths from Palfau or from the Sandgraben near Hollenstein on the Ybbs in two and a half to three hours' walking time. The 1,770 m high elevation on which the summit cross stands is usually visited. The highest point of the Gamsstein, the Hochkogel, is about 250 metres away in a south-westerly direction and can be reached easily on footpaths.

The Gamsstein is often climbed in winter as a ski tour, mostly from Palfau, with ascent and descent taking place almost exactly in the line of the summit cross over the Hühnerriegel. Further southwest, separated from the highest point by a cut, is the 1,766 m high Gamssteineck.
