Hiking with a view, Gleisdorf region

Open
Two “highlights” await hikers on this tour around Gleisdorf: the Kleeberg, which is considered a landmark for the region, and the viewing platform on Europaberg.

While the lively town of Gleisdorf lies in the valley, this hike leads into the southern hills on the edge of the Raabtal. Due to the topography alone, there are many beautiful views of Eastern Styria along the tour, but the actual destinations are the two observation towers.

The viewing platform on Europaberg was opened in March 2015 and is a nice rest and viewing place. The platform is only a few meters high, but surprises with a great view; the Kleeberg can also be seen from here. In addition to an overview board of European capitals and the surrounding mountains, there is also a drinking fountain.

The observation tower on Kleeberg is visible from far away. The modern, striking staircase was built as part of the state “Energy” exhibition in 2001. The climb up the 140 steps is definitely worth it, the view is sensational and the attached panoramic boards help with orientation.

For a stop, we recommend the Schwab-Wiesenwirt inn in Urscha or the Buschenschänken in the area around Gleisdorf.

The hike can be shortened for a short tour: Abbreviation 1: Flood retention basin – Labuch Abbreviation 2: Labuch – Perlegg Abbreviation 3: Gliederwehr – Perlegg – Europaberg Abbreviation 4: Ungerdorf/Marienhof – Perlegg (EW-B) | Forest path

The path is accessible without major difficulties and is therefore suitable for the whole family.

Start: Overview board at the Solar Stadium, Gleisdorf, Stationstrasse 1

* We start at the entrance to the solar stadium/rondel and go west and follow the signs “Marienhof or Europaberg”. * First along the stadium we soon turn right and now walk a short distance parallel to the motorway to the Raabbrücke. * After the bridge we turn left and now go slightly uphill. We are now leaving Gleisdorf and things will be quiet and tranquil. At the next intersection we keep right and go down towards “Marienhof/Ungerdorf”. We are now close to the highway again. * In the town of “Marienhof” we turn right into the forest (“Europaberg”). * At the next intersection we keep right and continue slightly downhill to the intersection with the SAM station 1512. * We now go left uphill to the FC Ungerdorf club building. * There we turn left and continue along the farm path, past a fishing pond and along the forest. * Before we reach the open meadow, we turn right into the forest and walk steeply uphill to a small farm. * We reach the small town of “Europaberg” and take the street to the left to the viewing platform. * After the detour to the panoramic mountain, we go back to the town of “Europaberg”.* In a garden we soon see a replica of the “Thinker” by Auguste Rodin on the left, and immediately afterwards we turn left. * We first walk on the asphalt road and turn left shortly after the town sign. * The trail now goes first through the forest and then across meadows to the valley floor near Labuch. * At the intersection in Labuch we turn left and continue along the street. * Soon we turn right towards “Kleeberg” and are now on the gravel road and cross the stream and walk uphill through the forest. * We will soon see the Kleeberg observation tower in front of us. Across the meadow, past a farm and after a right-left combination we head straight towards the mountain. * The descent first leads along the road, where we continue to the left towards “Urscha/Gleisdorf”. * We turn immediately right into the forest and soon reach the valley floor again and the flood retention facility with the “Art at the retention basin” facility. * At the intersection we turn right onto the state road and now go out through the village of Urscha to the Raabbrücke. * Immediately after the bridge we continue left until we reach the junction. * We continue to the right through the populated area and reach the stadium again, our starting point.

The Gleisdorf wave pool, with its 5 pools and the wave pool that gives it its name, is the ideal place for rest and relaxation after the hike.

Timetables and travel information can be found on the Austrian Federal Railway website or under Transport Information for the Verbundlinie. For local transport we recommend the SAM shared taxi East Styria. Please reserve in good time!
