Drachenhöhle Mixnitz
PerneggThe dragon's cave is a prehistorically important place. Particularly known for its variety of bats and for the legends that revolve around the dragon cave. The cave can only be visited with a guided hike from May to the end of September. Registration is mandatory.
The dragon cave is a prehistorically important place. The impressive portal leads into the mountain, which is located approx. 500 meters above Mixntiz on the western slope of the Röthelstein. Already around 50,000 years ago, the Drachenhöhle was a place of retreat for people from bears and wolves. Hike / guided tour: You hike for 1.5 hours to the official entrance to the cave. The increasingly steep path is worthwhile to get to know the place of origin of the "saga of the dragon". The cave got its name from fossil bone finds of the extinct cave bear. Trained cave guides accompany the tour participants through the cave, which is protected as a natural monument. It is one of the most important roosts for bats in Austria. For ecological reasons, a visit to the cave is only permitted as part of the guided tours. Guided tours take place from May to October.
