Kirchkogel Pernegg - Natura 2000
PerneggNatura 2000 - Kirchkogel near Pernegg
- Altitude: 812 m
- Area: 46 ha
The Kirchkogel itself is a large mass of serpentine covered by a mighty ampholite mantle. Along with heavy metal, dolomite and salt soils, serpentine is a prototype of an extreme ecological location. The sparsely stocked serpentine slopes are to be understood as a relic site of the first order. The area is characterized by types of vegetation that are unique for Central Europe, both for themselves and because of their close interlinking with completely opposing contact societies (ravine forests, acidic beech forests). Special mention should be made here of the Erico-Pinetum sylvestris asplenietosum cuneifolii, the serpentine-snow-heather-red pine forest, as well as the Vaccinio vitis-idaeae-Pinetum rhododendretosum ferruginei, the block-red pine forest in the form of serpentine on site.
Further information on the Kirchkogel and its protected area can be found in the information folder of the Province of Styria (in german).
