The Gesäuse is too beautiful to spend just one or two days here. It's just as well that it knows how to keep its visitors: with a hiking trail network of over 500 kilometers and one of the highest densities of mountain huts in the Eastern Alps, there's more than one reason to stay in the Styrian wilderness for several days at once. A hut hopping is obvious: from one hut to the next, from one mountain range to the next. This is how you really get to know the Gesäuse from every angle: Its huts, scenic diversity and different mountain groups.

First of all: The route presented here is only one of many, a suggestion that can be flexibly modified and varied according to individual ability and preference. Styrian cherry picking, if you will. And the first raisin is at 1,523 meters, at the foot of the mighty Reichenstein. Dark wood paneling, green shutters, Kasnocken - welcome to the Mödlingerhütte! History then blows around your nose at the second raisin: the Hesshütte is located at 1,699 meters on the Ennsecksattel, in the middle of the Hochtor Group and in the immediate vicinity of Königin Hochtor, the highest peak of the Ennstal Alps, Planspitze and Hochzinödl. An institution founded in 1893 on the initiative of the "Alpine Society D'Ennstaler". This is the original cell of the Alpine Club, initiated by Gesäuse father Heinrich Heß. It is to him and his "D'Ennstalers" that we owe the network of trails in the Gesäuse - and the Hess Hut, which preserves a worthy memory with its name.

From hut to hut

The Gesäuse Hüttenrunde leads in a large loop through the Gesäuse National Park and sets its scenic trademark "wild water & steep rock" almost breathtakingly in scene. Its ascent is technically moderate (red marked mountain trails), but requires a certain amount of endurance and experience and can be placed a little above those of its famous neighbor, the Luchs Trail, in terms of overall requirements (especially because no luggage transport can be offered on the Hüttenrunde - even if the pure walking times are a little shorter than on the Luchs Trail). Whether in one piece - that's seven daily stages - or in several sections, the Gesäuse Hüttenrunde will open up to you the unique magic of the mountain landscape in the National Park with the deceleration and inner peace necessary for long-distance hikers.
