This challenging mountain tour leads from Tragöß up to the Messnerin and rewards you with impressive views, panoramic vistas, and a feeling of freedom amid the impressive alpine landscape of the Hochschwab massif. A worthwhile tip for anyone who likes to aim high.
Anyone traveling around the Green Lake will encounter many visitors – but those seeking the silence of the mountains will find it on the trail to Messnerin. The tour starts in Tragöß-Oberort and leads up to 1,835 m via a continuously steep, well-marked Alpine Club trail (No. 844). The trail runs mostly through forest, crosses forest roads several times, and offers a first view of the Green Lake at the Windscharte (approx. 1,430 m). Once at the top, the view widens – the terrain becomes more open and the view all the more impressive. The summit rewards you with a magnificent panorama and a peaceful atmosphere, far away from the hustle and bustle of the valley. Sure-footedness and good physical condition are required for this mountain tour.

Route description in text:
The starting point for the tour is the bus stop Tragöß-Oberort at 793 m above sea level. In the center of the village, follow the signs towards Messnerin. The route initially climbs gently along a road through a populated area until, after about 600 meters, it branches off to the left onto a marked trail. After crossing a small wooden bridge, the continuous ascent through wooded terrain begins, crossing forest roads several times.
At about 1430 m, you reach the Windscharte, a viewpoint with a beautiful view of the Grüner See. The further ascent leads through the mountain pine zone above the tree line to the open, expansive summit area. Shortly afterwards, you reach the panoramic summit of the Messnerin at 1835 m. The descent follows the same route as the ascent.
