Picnic

A lovely little spot with beautiful views of the landscape or a gently babbling stream, a checked blanket and a picnic basket spilling over with tasty treats courtesy of the Thermen- & Vulkanland – it all sounds like a wonderful holiday moment.

Happiness is found on the meadow. Pure nature all around us, pure nature in our picnic basket containing authentic Styrian fare. Now we lie back on our picnic blanket among the vines. The sun tickles our backs; the aroma of fine food tickles our nostrils. We grow more and more curious about the contents of the picnic basket... What will it reveal? Selchwürstel (smoked herby sausage), Backhendl (breaded fried chicken), delicious spreads and home-made bread or even cakes? And what about drinks? Weißburgunder or Morillon, maybe a home-distilled schnapps to wash it all down – all from the Thermen- & Vulkanland, of course!

So where to find this bliss? The choice is impressively wide: beneath the thousand-year-old oak  in Bierbaum, at the Sicheldorfer Pond near Bad Radkersburg or perhaps in the vineyard at Kapfenstein Castle?

Dining al fresco

Good news for all foodies: the range of ready-filled picnic baskets continues to grow, and can easily be ordered online and collected by arrangement. Picnic services have long been popular in the Thermen- und Vulkanland Steiermark. Vineyards, historical castles and charming landscapes are delightful places to go for a stroll, equipped with a picnic basket supplied by wine taverns or restaurants which fill them with specialities from Styria’s “Wine Country”... Anything from Backhendl (breaded fried chicken) to fresh farmer’s bread. Here you will find many options for a picnic with your loved ones in Southeast and East Styria.

Additional picnic tips

  • The “Arena” at the natural bathing lake inGroßsteinbach. Beautiful lake complex situated on the “Feistritztalradweg” (“Feistritz Valley Cycling Trail”). Plus, kids will love the fantastic sunken pirate ship to play on.
  • The floodplains of the River Mur near Bad Radkersburg – for example near Donnersdorf, at the cycling bridge to Slovenia. Nestled in the heart of an unspoiled Natura 2000 protection area, populated by lots of water fowl and frogs.
  • Right on the Kaskögerlweg, at the Haas family farm, with a wonderful view of Southeast Styria’s “Hügelland” (“Hill Country”). If you get thirsty, there’s a self-service station to help you out.
  • Along the “Weinwanderweg der Sinne” (“Wine Road of the Senses”) in Sankt Anna am Aigen. The spot at Schemming Chapel is particularly charming, with gorgeous views included.
